Centerpiece Feature: Searching for Kapwa

Filmmakers Larry Daguino Lariosa and Terrence Marcotte will be present for the Q&A after the screening

Inspired by the pre-colonial Filipino value kapwa, or “shared identity”, Searching for Kapwa follows the filmmakers quest to understand his ancestral roots, heal from a sense of cultural alienation, and find his place in the arc of history. As a child of immigrants and a queer brown person living in polarized America, Larry’s journey unpacks the complicated history of the Philippines, and its lasting impact on the Filipino diaspora. Ultimately, the film is a densely layered exploration of what it is to be American, and the legacy of the generations we all carry within us.

Larry D. Lariosa is a songwriter, musician, and filmmaker. Searching for Kapwa is his first feature length film. Drawing from 20+ years as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Larry uses his art to tell stories as a form of self expression, activism, and healing. He has performed in various Bay Area productions and musical collaborations. Larry previously served as the LGBT Director for the University of California, San Francisco. He received his BA in Psychology from SF State University, and Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of San Francisco.

Searching for Kapwa is Terrence Marcotte’s first feature length film. He believes that the creative process is key to living an engaged and impactful life, and channels that energy into visual arts and design. His day job is as a Nurse Practitioner within the San Francisco Department of Public Health. Terrence has a BA in Human Development from the Evergreen State College, and a Masters of Science in Nursing from the University of California, San Francisco.
