Tomorrow, To Feel

Directed by Maki Makilan
The fall of capitalism in the late 2040s situates domestic migrants Phil and Wax in the eye of the economic storm. They struggle to make ends meet, all while seemingly meeting the end of their relationship. With their hands tied by the pressing matters of everyday survival, Phil and Wax have no choice but to watch the estrangement—from each other and from who they once were—grow. After having spent years as an overseas Filipino worker, Wax’s brother, Al, finds his homecoming in the comforts of Phil and Wax’s residence.

The three interrogate the reality of finding a place for themselves in the world and a place for hope, resistance, and most of all, love to persist, if such a possibility exists in the face of economic violence. Phil and Wax mourn what they have and will continue to live through. When the death of hope is imminent, they decide to breathe—to feel. They look beyond their door and see reminders of the humanity that they have been forced to abandon: bodies glowing—living, and Phil and Wax tread slowly towards them, embracing resistance.

Maki Makilan is a Negros Occidental-born writer, director, and cinematographer based in Quezon City, Philippines.

Her works are watermarked by intersections between queerness, domestic migrancy, and interpersonal connections borne out of displacement both physical and social. As a queer migrant, she interrogates the politics of the personal and the sense of self, and proposes and projects possibilities in spaces, in pasts, and in futures.

Her student shorts have been screened in limited festivals, digital platforms, and community-based screenings in the Philippines and Southeast Asia. Her cinematography has been recognized by critics in talkbacks and publications, and nominated and awarded in various independent film festivals in the Philippines including SineKabataan, Cinema Rehiyon, and Mindanao Film Festival, among others.

She is an alumna of the University of the Philippines Film Institute and the Mowelfund Film Institute.
