Novena

Novena explores the lives of a Filipino-American family in a crisis of faith during the final days of a 40-day Novena prayer. The film deals with Filipino Catholic grieving customs and familial intimacy and how these relationships can be at times imperfect but not irreparable.


Nolan Valerio is a filmmaker from San Diego whose work explores intimate stories about family and culture and their intersection with the Filipino-American experience. He received his undergraduate degree from UC San Diego where he was Station Manager of Triton Television. His Media Honors Thesis film “Novena,” premiered at LAAPFF and screened at SDAFF and SDIFF in 2020.
